Bill was awarded the, "Citizen Of the Year Award" twice

Merseyside police's Citizen of the Year Award, in 1980 and 1986

For years he also recorded the ECHO onto tapes for Liverpool Talking Newspapers for the Blind, helped set up Speke Citizens' Advice Bureau, put in hours for the Harris Club for the Disabled, and served a host of other charities.

During his career at Dunlop, Mr Smaje worked on the first cycle inner tube, and won medals for his bravery in World War II.

For the last few years of his life, Mr Smaje replaced the number plate on his mobility scooter to show his age.

Bill passed away at the grand age of 90.....A wonderful human being.
